Intersecting Culture + ASPEC Identity

ASPEC identity has become necessitated by the dynamic in which capitalism, through commodification, has positioned romance and sex as requirements of the human experience. The influence of Western capitalism and worldview has, indeed, influenced the creation of LGBTQ+ and queer identity by “othering” various ways of being; given these origins, LGBTQ+ identities, including ASPEC identities, may be difficult to translate to other worldviews and cultures. In this session, our panelists will discuss how culture can influence the ways we choose to understand, explore, articulate, and express ASPEC identity and experience.

This session is part of the QUEERIFY 2025 series, which consists of Zoom sessions exploring queer stories and experiences. For more information, contact QUEERIFY creator kaleikūkamakani “kalei” ruiz at agorospe@hawaii.edu.
